How to Use the Swimming Pool for an Abdominal Workout

ABDOMINAL POOL EXERCISE

There are multiple benefits to owning a swimming pool – from the fun and relaxation it provides for your family, to being the perfect refuge at the end of a long, hot day. Moreover, a pool can provide a means to stay physically fit without sacrificing any of the fun.

Targeting your abdominal muscles is just one of many ways to stay fit while using your pool. A variety of exercises can specifically target those muscles while providing a great low-impact workout:

Walking in Water

It’s as easy as it sounds and it will provide a solid ab workout. Using the shallow end of the pool – where your will touch bottom – walk from one side of the pool to the other while alternately lifting your legs until they reach your abdominal muscles. Tighten your muscles during this process while making sure your back is straight.

Kicks

Facing the edge the pool, hold on with both hands and let your body float face down. Keep your legs together and alternately kick them up and down. Do this for 30 seconds and then rest.

Leg Lifts

Another great exercise for the shallow end of your swimming pool.  With your back to the rim, hold on to the edge and lift both legs to the chest at the same time.

Crunches

The gym isn’t the only place to do this ab-tightening exercise. Begin by putting your legs on the pool deck up to your knees. Lie flat in the water and then pull your upper body out of the water as high as you can.

Using a Kickboard

Grab the kickboard with both hands facing down and lift your body as close to the water’s surface as possible. Kick your legs while also tightening your stomach muscles. Then turn on your back and do backstroke kicks while, again, tightening your abdominals.

Jumps

Using either a kids pool or the shallow end of a regular swimming pool. Begin walking and then pick up the pace and perform a few jumps, making sure to tighten your abdominals with every jump.

These are just some of the ab-crunching exercises you can do in the comfort of your pool – exercises that will provide variety from a typical gym workout. And you’ll sacrifice none of the fun and refreshment that your swimming pool provides.
